Something similar, much bigger, but similar, occured June 30 1908 in Tunguska, Russia. A small asteroid entered the atmosphere traveling at tremendous speed. The Chelyabinsk meteor was later determined to come from the LL chondrite group. Numerous small fragments (0.5 to 1 g) were scattered around the hole on the snowy ice. The meteor was moving at a speed of about 18 km/s (40,000 mph), it passed over the southern Ural region and exploded in the air over Chelyabinsk Oblast. The main mass of the Chelyabinsk meteorite fell into Chebarkul lake and broke the ice, forming a 7 m hole (54°57’33.74"N, 60°19’19.58"E).
